Pema Chödrön (born Deirdre Blomfield-Brown, 1936) is an American-born Tibetan Buddhist nun and one of the most widely respected teachers of mindfulness and compassion. She studied under Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and received full ordination in 1981. Pema has served as the director of Gampo Abbey in Nova Scotia and has dedicated her life to sharing Buddhist teachings in the West. Her bestselling books include When Things Fall Apart, The Places That Scare You, and Start Where You Are. Through her nonprofit, The Pema Chödrön Foundation, she continues to support monastic and lay Buddhist communities worldwide.
