Authors: Herbert L. Gravitz, PhD & Julie D. Bowden, MS
Rich with warmth, insight, and professional expertise, Recovery addresses the unique struggles faced by adult children of alcoholics (ACOAs). Written in a clear question-and-answer format, this groundbreaking guide explores the fears, hopes, and challenges that many ACOAs encounter in their journey toward healing.
Gravitz and Bowden, both respected therapists and workshop leaders, outline the stages of recovery in accessible terms—Survival, Emergent Awareness, Core Issues, Transformations, Integration, and Genesis—providing a framework for understanding how the past continues to shape present experiences.
This essential book helps readers confront issues of control, intimacy, family dynamics, and self-worth, while offering compassionate and practical strategies for growth.
“Awareness. If you only read one book on adult children of alcoholics this year, make this the one.” — Timmen L. Cermak, M.D., President, National Association for Adult Children of Alcoholics
“Gravitz and Bowden provide the first practical guide for adult children of alcoholics. Their creative description of the stages of recovery is especially useful. At last there is a rationale for deciding what issues and what treatment services are most relevant to each individual.” — Robert J. Ackerman, PhD, Author, Children of Alcoholics
“Dr. Gravitz and Ms. Bowden have definitely filled a much-needed area for adult children of alcoholics in their new book. This is the first book that attempts to answer many of the ‘silent’ questions of the millions of adult children of alcoholics in our society. Their years of experience, perceptions, and sensitivities are obvious in this well-thought-out book.”
Herbert L. Gravitz, PhD is a Clinical Psychologist in Santa Barbara, California, and a founding board member of the National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACOA). He has authored several works, including The Children of Alcoholics Handbook, and has served in editorial and advisory roles for NACOA.
Julie D. Bowden, MS, a Marriage, Family, and Child Psychotherapist, developed the first Alcohol/Drug Awareness Program for the University of California system and has consulted for inpatient and outpatient recovery programs. A founding board member and first treasurer of NACOA, she is herself an adult child of an alcoholic. Together with Dr. Gravitz, she leads recovery retreats, therapy groups, and seminars for ACOAs and others affected by family trauma.
