Author: Marya Hornbacher
Marya Hornbacher, the bestselling author of Wasted and Madness, offers an honest and illuminating examination of the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous for those living with both addiction and mental health disorders. Drawing on her own experiences with bipolar disorder and substance use, Hornbacher guides readers through the special challenges of working each Step when co-occurring issues are present.
She explores how mental illness can complicate traditional recovery approaches and addresses the reality that many people in recovery need therapy, medication, and mental health support alongside the Twelve Steps. With courage and clarity, Hornbacher demonstrates how the Steps can still provide spiritual sustenance, practical guidance, and a framework for stability, one day at a time.

Review: Readers describe Sane as inspiring, hopeful, and practical — different in tone from her earlier, more emotionally raw works but invaluable for those facing the intersection of addiction and mental illness.
