The Classic Guide
Author: Judy Tatelbaum
Grief is one of life’s most difficult yet unavoidable experiences. In The Courage to Grieve, Judy Tatelbaum offers compassionate, practical guidance for facing loss with honesty, courage, and hope. While the book focuses primarily on grieving the death of a loved one, its wisdom applies to all forms of loss—whether through separation, disappointment, or unexpected change.
Tatelbaum reminds readers that grief, with its many overwhelming emotions—sorrow, guilt, confusion, resentment, loneliness, and even loss of will to live—is a natural human response. Rather than denying or suppressing these feelings, she encourages embracing them as part of a path toward recovery and growth. With a tone that is spiritual, optimistic, and easy to understand, she provides tools not only for navigating grief but also for supporting others, including children, in their own grieving processes.
Ultimately, this book is not only about loss but also about transformation. Tatelbaum shows how grief can lead to deeper joy, courage, and personal growth, helping us live more fully and fear death less.
Judy Tatelbaum, M.S.W., attended Syracuse University and the Simmons College School of Social Work in Boston.
