The Buddha’s Way of Mindfulness
Author: Nyanaponika Thera | Foreword: Sylvia Boorstein
First published over half a century ago, The Heart of Buddhist Meditation has become a timeless classic on mindfulness and insight practice. Written by the German-born monk Nyanaponika Thera, this foundational text introduces readers to the Buddha’s core teachings on mindfulness in a clear, accessible, and deeply practical way.
With precision and compassion, Thera explains the Four Foundations of Mindfulness, the practice of clear comprehension in daily life, and the transformative potential of sustained awareness. Far more than a meditation manual, this book serves as both a guide and a companion for anyone seeking to heal grief, cultivate inner calm, and free themselves from the sense of dislocation that modern life often brings.
This edition includes a new introduction by Sylvia Boorstein, who shares how this very text shaped her path as a mindfulness teacher. Her reflections highlight the enduring relevance of Nyanaponika’s work for contemporary practitioners of all backgrounds.
“This is the book that started it all—the book that, with great clarity and ardor, introduced Vipassana and mindfulness to the West. Its content is timeless and universal. All teachers of mindfulness-based programs would do well to carefully read and reread this book.”
— Jon Kabat-Zinn, author of Mindfulness for Beginners and Full Catastrophe Living
“It’s wonderful to see this new edition of an invaluable, classic meditation guide. Nyanaponika Thera’s The Heart of Buddhist Meditation is sure to benefit many.”
— Sharon Salzberg, co-founder of the Insight Meditation Society
