The Spirituality of Imperfection
Embracing Our Humanity to Find Meaning, Healing, and Joy
Authors: Ernest Kurtz & Katherine Ketcham
The Spirituality of Imperfection is a timeless, compassionate guide to finding serenity and meaning through the acceptance of our human flaws. Drawing upon wisdom from the world’s great spiritual traditions — from the Hebrew prophets and Greek philosophers to Buddhist sages, Christian mystics, and modern recovery movements like Alcoholics Anonymous — Ernest Kurtz and Katherine Ketcham explore one universal truth: to be human is to be imperfect.
Rather than striving for an impossible ideal of perfection, this book invites readers to embrace vulnerability, failure, and limitation as gateways to spiritual depth and connection. Through more than one hundred beautifully told stories, parables, and reflections, Kurtz and Ketcham show how acknowledging our brokenness leads to compassion — both for ourselves and others.
This classic work has become a touchstone for those in recovery, spiritual seekers, and anyone weary of perfectionism. It’s a book about surrender, humility, and the courage to be exactly who we are — and in that acceptance, to find grace.
“An inspiring guide, offering comfort… to those who want to stop striving for perfection and start living.”
— Publishers Weekly
