The Twelve Steps and the Sacraments
A Catholic Journey Through Recovery
Author: Scott Weeman
In The Twelve Steps and the Sacraments, Scott Weeman bridges the timeless spiritual wisdom of the Twelve Steps with the deep grace of Catholic sacramental life. As both a person in long-term recovery and the founder of Catholic in Recovery, Weeman brings personal authenticity and pastoral compassion to those who seek freedom from addiction while remaining rooted in their faith.
This groundbreaking book — winner of the 2018 Catholic Press Association Award (Second Place, Sacraments category) — reveals how the sacraments of the Church mirror and strengthen each of the Twelve Steps, providing a complete path toward healing, surrender, and lasting spiritual renewal.
Through personal stories, reflections, and practical guidance, Weeman shows how God’s grace flows through both recovery and Catholic tradition, uniting the two into one seamless journey toward wholeness.
Weeman shows how each sacrament parallels a Step, creating a powerful spiritual synergy between recovery and faith:
Each chapter pairs theological reflection with lived experience, helping readers experience both the humility of recovery and the transforming power of the sacraments.
“A penetrating look at the essential relationship between the beauty of each Step and the sacramental reality that links recovery to a deepening relationship with Jesus Christ.”
— Most Rev. Robert W. McElroy, Bishop of San Diego
“Whether you are Catholic or not, this book will help you understand the sacraments in light of the Twelve Steps — and the Twelve Steps in the light of Christ.”
— Marcus Grodi, Founder, The Coming Home Network International
“Part memoir, part manual, this book shows that the Twelve Steps harmonize perfectly with Catholic spirituality. Scott’s story is living proof that grace can transform sobriety into sanctity.”
— Patrick Coffin, Host, The Patrick Coffin Show
Scott Weeman is the founder and executive director of Catholic in Recovery, a nonprofit ministry uniting the sacramental life of the Church with Twelve Step recovery principles. He entered sobriety from alcohol and drug addiction on October 10, 2011, and has since dedicated his life to helping others find healing through faith.
Weeman’s story and ministry have been featured on EWTN’s The Journey Home, Catholic Answers, Christopher Closeup, and The Catholic Hipster Podcast. He holds a degree in Organizational Management from Point Loma Nazarene University and is pursuing graduate studies in Clinical Counseling. He lives in San Diego, California, with his wife, Jacqueline.
