The Zen of Recovery
A Practical Synthesis of the Twelve Steps and the Eightfold Path
Author: Mel Ash
In The Zen of Recovery, Mel Ash offers a groundbreaking bridge between Eastern philosophy and Western recovery wisdom, bringing together the mindfulness of Zen Buddhism and the spiritual principles of the Twelve Steps. With honesty, humor, and humility, Ash shares how both traditions lead toward the same ultimate goal — liberation from suffering, self-deception, and attachment.
Drawing from his own experiences as an abused child, alcoholic, and Zen student turned dharma teacher, Ash presents a deeply personal yet universal guide to awakening. Through the lens of AA’s Twelve Steps and Zen’s Eightfold Path, he explores how meditation, awareness, and compassion can transform addiction, shame, and emotional pain into wisdom and freedom.
You don’t need to be Buddhist to benefit from this book — its message of presence, acceptance, and inner peace resonates with anyone seeking serenity and self-understanding.
“A moving synthesis of East and West — wise, compassionate, and practical. Mel Ash speaks to the heart of recovery with the insight of a seasoned teacher and the honesty of someone who’s walked the path.”
“A fresh and inspiring guide that brings ancient Zen principles into the modern struggle for sobriety and serenity.”
Mel Ash (1949–2011) was a Zen teacher, artist, and writer known for his innovative work connecting spirituality, creativity, and recovery. A former authorized Zen teacher in a traditional lineage, Ash led workshops nationwide on Zen, Beat spirituality, and alternative psychology.
He is also the author of Beat Spirit: The Way of the Beat Writers as a Living Spiritual Practice and Shaving the Inside of Your Skull. Deeply immersed in both art and spiritual life, Ash lived in Providence, Rhode Island, where he taught, created, and inspired others to awaken to their true nature.
