The Zen Way of Recovery
A Compassionate Buddhist Approach to Healing from Addiction
Author: Laura Burges
In The Zen Way of Recovery, Zen teacher Laura Burges offers a compassionate and deeply practical guide for anyone walking the path of recovery from addiction or addictive behaviors. Blending Buddhist wisdom with her own story of sobriety, Burges illuminates how the teachings of Zen — particularly the Eight Awarenesses of the Awakened Being, the Six Paramitas, and the writings of Dogen Zenji — can support healing, self-compassion, and long-term recovery.
Written with warmth, honesty, and a sense of humor born from lived experience, this book bridges the spiritual discipline of Zen and the fellowship and courage of recovery programs. Burges demonstrates that recovery and awakening are not two paths but one: a daily practice of awareness, acceptance, and loving connection with others.
Whether you’re in a 12-step program, exploring Buddhist practice for the first time, or seeking a grounded spiritual supplement to your recovery, The Zen Way of Recovery offers wisdom that is both ancient and freshly alive.
