Trauma and Addiction: Ending the Cycle of Pain Through Emotional Literacy
Author: Dr. Tian Dayton, Ph.D.
In Trauma and Addiction, clinical psychologist and renowned psychodrama therapist Dr. Tian Dayton exposes the deep connection between unresolved trauma and self-destructive addictive behaviors — a cycle that keeps countless people trapped in pain.
Drawing from decades of clinical experience, Dr. Dayton explains that trauma is not only stored in the mind — it lives in the body. Because of this, healing requires more than talk therapy alone. Using psychodrama and experiential methods, she demonstrates how engaging the body through role play, movement, and creative exercises can unlock repressed memories and help release long-held emotional pain.
This book provides a framework for understanding how emotional wounding leads to self-medication through substances or behaviors — such as alcohol, drugs, work, sex, gambling, or materialism — and how developing emotional literacy can end the cycle once and for all.
“Addicts and their families are often victims of post-traumatic stress. This book highlights the importance of developing emotional literacy to heal both trauma and addiction. Dayton’s techniques—journaling, role-play, and creative exercises—offer practical ways to transform pain into self-understanding.”
