Author: John Daishin Buksbazen
Foreword: Peter Matthiessen
Zen Meditation in Plain English is an excellent, practical introduction to Zen meditation, written in a warm and accessible style. Whether you are brand new to meditation or seeking to deepen your practice, this guide walks you through the essentials of zazen step by step—from posture and breathing to group practice and intensive retreats.
While emphasizing the importance of good instruction and community support, Buksbazen also provides clear instructions and simple exercises for beginning a practice on your own. For those looking to uncover a clear and insightful path into Zen philosophy and practice, this book is a perfect companion.
John Daishin Buksbazen began Zen practice in 1967 and went on to receive ordination in the Korean Chogye Order of Zen. He studied extensively at the Zen Center of Los Angeles, serving as a counselor, teacher, and editor of the ZCLA Journal. He later earned his PsyD in Psychology and now integrates Buddhist psychology and meditation with his work as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. He leads the Ocean Moon Sangha in Santa Monica and continues to teach zazen and Buddhist psychology to both practitioners and professionals.
Peter Matthiessen, who provides the foreword, was a three-time National Book Award–winning author and environmental activist, best known for The Snow Leopard and In the Spirit of Crazy Horse.
